www.MotorHomeMinistry.com PO Box 51654, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579 “Lugene’s Law” My wife ( Lugene ) and I are in our 60’s and operate a Ministry for Kids in South Carolina called www.MotorHomeMinistry.com . On Tuesday Oct. 19th around 10am just outside Conway, SC on St. Rt. 501 on route to an event my wife got up in our motorhome to secure a swinging door. BIG mistake! She should have kept her seatbelt on … but the door at the moment was more important. We now know this …. But, read on … As she was getting ready to sit down and buckle up a “Moped” came across 501 and in to my lane causing me to slam on my Air Brakes to keep from hitting him. He would have surely died if I had not. My wife was thrown into the windshield head first … after I saw and heard the impact my heart sank into grief and guilt. As I looked out the window the “Moped” operator stopped, saw what he had done with her injured and in the dash of the motorhome and the massive cracks throughout the window and fled the scene leaving me alone to attend to my wife and get emergency help. The fireman and paramedics on duty confided in me after Lugene was taken away to the closest trauma center that this kind of accident is happening all over the city, county, state and our nation. As the operation of “Mopeds” is the only transportation “DUI” drivers have once their licenses are revoked. After 911 was called all the GREAT help of Horry County was upon our motorhome on the side of the road. Lugene, was taken by ambulance to Conway Hospital and then to Grand Strand Hospital for an on call neurosurgeon. She received EXCELLENT care! Lugene had broken her bones in her spinal column but it could have been a lot worst. She has been in a lot of pain and will take months to fully recover. The strain on our limited finances will be enormous even with health insurance. An account on Go Fund Me was set up to help her out. https://www.gofundme.com/uj6yvgps But the point of this letter is going to me my last mission in life (we are both 61) : 1. To remove all “MoPeds” from major highways … They are too slow and have no horsepower to be in the lane of traffic especially on a major highway. 2. If they have a DUI and their license has been revoked … They should not be able to operate ANY motorized vehicle. If they must get from point A to point B they will have to walk, ride a bike, take public transportation or a taxi. Driving is a privilege and they lost that privilege when they were drinking or using drugs and driving at the same time. If you are receiving this email, I implore you to seek out your government officials and share with them this story. This cannot continue on our highways. The laws have got be changed … This is a senseless accident that could have been avoided. Help me save others from injuries or loss of life. This could be you or your loved one next time. SC government officials … http://www.sc.gov/Government/Pages/default.aspx God Bless; Larry Hammond MotorHomeMinistry www.MotorHomeMinistry.com larry@MotorHomeMinistry.com Lugene@MotorHomeMinistry.com
